How to Prepare Your Dog for Their First Boarding Stay

First time boarding your pup? Here's everything San Diego dog parents need to know to make the experience stress-free for everyone.

Leaving your fur baby for the first time can feel a bit nerve-wracking. Trust me, I totally get it! As a dog boarder here in San Diego, I've welcomed hundreds of first-time pups into my home, and I've learned a thing or two about making the transition as smooth as possible.

Here are my tried-and-true tips for preparing your dog (and yourself!) for their first boarding stay.

Start with a Meet and Greet

Before the actual stay, I always recommend a quick meet and greet. This gives your pup a chance to sniff around, explore the space, and get comfortable with me. Dogs are incredibly perceptive. If they sense a friendly, calm environment, they'll settle in much faster.

Most of my guests in Spring Valley warm up within the first few minutes. By the time they leave, they don't want to go home!

Pack the Essentials

Here's what I suggest bringing for your dog's stay:

  • Their regular food. Switching food during a stay can upset tummies. Bring enough for the full trip, pre-portioned if possible.
  • Medications. If your pup takes any daily meds, bring them clearly labeled with instructions.
  • A comfort item. A favorite toy, blanket, or even an old t-shirt that smells like you can work wonders for anxious pups.
  • Vaccination records. I require current Rabies, DHPP, and Bordetella vaccinations. First-time guests just need to bring proof once.

Keep Goodbyes Short and Sweet

This one's for you, pet parent! Dogs pick up on our emotions, so if you're anxious and lingering at the door, your pup will wonder if something's wrong. A quick, cheerful goodbye followed by a confident exit helps your dog understand that this is a normal, safe experience.

I promise. Within minutes of you leaving, most pups are already exploring the backyard or making friends with the other guests.

Stick to Their Routine

Let me know your dog's typical schedule. When they eat, when they nap, when they're most playful. I do my best to maintain their regular routine because consistency helps dogs feel secure, even in a new environment.

If your pup is used to a morning walk and an afternoon snooze, that's exactly what they'll get here.

Consider a Trial Run

If your dog has never been away from home, a one-night trial stay can be a great way to ease into it. This way, you'll see how they handle the experience, and I can share updates and photos so you feel confident about longer stays in the future.

Many of my regular San Diego clients started with a single night and now book week-long staycations!

What to Expect During Their Stay

I send regular photo and video updates throughout your dog's stay so you're never left wondering. You'll see them playing in the yard, lounging on comfy beds, and generally living their best life.

Remember. This is a real home, not a kennel. Your dog gets cage-free roaming, personal attention, and the kind of cozy environment that helps even the most anxious pups relax.
